A Timeline For College Applications
Now you have decided to go to college. You have any idea of where you wan to go but when should you start the college application process? Well that question can be answered after you know when the schools you are interested in have their application deadlines. Make sure you leave enough time before the applications are due so that you can put your best foot forward. You will need to put together your transcripts, letters of recommendation, transcripts, create application essays, fill out FAFSA and financial aid forms and more.
What you need to know about applying to college on time is that there are two main types of admissions calendars, rolling admissions and set admissions deadlines. These admissions calendars often reflect the academic schedules of set start dates. Many traditional colleges have one or two start dates, and other colleges such as some online colleges often have rolling or many start dates per year.
Get Your Application Due Dates
Take your list of target schools and find out from each one when their applications are due. Once you have this list of deadlines you can plan your customized timeline. It is best to make two sets of deadlines for each school, one that is your target of when you would like to send all the materials in and one that is the absolute deadline provided by the school itself.
High school students have the opportunity to work with their school guidance counselors to help them gather information and put together a customized application plan. You can review all of your target schools as well as your grades and test scores to make sure you have a realistic list of schools that you are targeting.
If you have been working for a while you may want to look to someone in your company who you respect and trust to help provide some guidance during this process. A mentor or senior manager who has the degree you are looking to get is a good option.
Gather College Applications, Letters of Recommendation and Request Transcripts
Request the college admission applications from your target schools. Many schools now have online applications that you can start, save your work, and come back later to complete them. You should go ahead and make sure to bookmark all of these links for your desired school list.
For your letters of recommendation you should create your list of potential people you want to ask. It is best to have people who know you and are high up in your company or have an interesting background or point of view about their experiences with you.
Contact any schools that you have attended in the past and have them send you transcripts. Make sure to look at the school applications and request the correct number. Colleges often ask for several signed sealed copies. Some schools will even require that the transcripts be sent directly to them.
Start Applications, Ask For Recommendations
Start filling out applications and get your essay outlines going. The earlier you start the less stress you will have about your essays. This is probably the second most important part of the application after your grades and test scores so take the time you need to write them well.
You should ask all the people who you want to write your recommendations if they are willing and provide them with a deadline of when you need them. Make sure to give them a deadline before you need to send them in so that if they are not what you expected or they don’t come through with the letter you can still get a replacement.
Review the transcripts you requested and make sure all the grades and classes are correct. Many schools require you to provide all of the classes you have ever taken including summer school, online courses or night classes.
If there are college or career fairs happening in your are you should do your best to attend. You may find a new school that you have not thought of or you may have the chance to meet people from one of your target schools.
The common application provided in some college applications can be sent in early so that the school can set up a file on you and await the additional materials you will be sending .
For early application, early decision candidates you need to submit your full application. For some schools that accept early applications you can submit it and if you are rejected for the early application cycle you can still reapply for standard decision acceptance.
Now that you have begun the application process you need a good plan on how to get scholarship money . The best approach is to make a list of all the scholarships you are interested in the same way you did with the college applications.
Extra Tip: Make copies of everything you send to the schools in case things get lost in the mail or you want to reuse some of it for other applications.
Finish Full Application, Find Housing, Apply for Financial Aid
Now it’s time to take the plunge and finish the application for admissions. Make sure you send out any mail in parts of the application enough time in advance so you don’t have to worry about postal delays.
You should fill out your FAFSA application and any other scholarships or grants you would like to apply for.
If you want to live on campus you should send in your housing information at this point. If you are not sure about how to find a good place to live do some research online to find out whether campus housing or off campus apartments are right for you.
Extra Tip: When it comes to application materials you may want to send them in a registered return receipt envelope from the USPS, this way you can be sure that the application gets in on time.
This application schedule is just a recommendation. You should allow yourself at least six to nine months prior to when you want to attend college, or when the new academic schedule begins, to get all your application information in. Not everyone can begin the process this far in advance and if you are one of them don’t worry you can still get everything organized and in to the schools in time. Start as early as possible.
