How To Stay Healthy On Flights
The number of people heading to far off and exotic locations for their holidays is increasing every year. To arrive feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the activities and attractions available you should learn how to stay fit and healthy on board the flights taken.
The first couple of days of a vacation would be a complete waste if you arrived feeling drained, tired, or unwell. It could take a number of days to get back on your feet. Vacations should be a time to forget about stress and worry, not create more.
It isn’t only jet lag which can have an impact on your wellbeing; circulatory conditions such as deep vein thrombosis are also a risk when flying. This is a condition which results in blood clots forming in the legs with potentially disastrous consequences. There have been a number of fatalities caused by DVT on board long haul flights
The following tips should be understood in full before embarking on your trip to ensure you bring down the risks involved with the flight.
Exercise: It is essential to stay as active as possible on any flight. Try to walk up and down the aisle of the plane at least once every couple of hours, keeping your legs moving is important to combat any circulatory problems that may develop. Even when seated you can still keep your legs active. Check out the in-flight magazines for tips and exercises which can maintain and improve health without having to even get up. If possible always sit in a relaxed position, do not cross your legs as this can increase the chance of deep vein thrombosis.
Drink: On an international flight we are usually offered a selection of alcoholic beverages free of charge. Though you may feel tempted to knock back a few whiskeys or beers this will not have a positive effect on your wellbeing. Caffeine is also to be avoided when flying as this will cause an increased dehydration due to the diuretic properties. An aircraft cabin will be pressurised and very low in humidity. This dryness can quickly make us feel dehydrated if we do not drink enough water. Ask the cabin crew for fruit juice as this will also give you a health boost.
Clothing: Wear loose fitting clothing. This is especially important with the choice of socks. Make sure they do not restrict the flow of blood. The temperature onboard can often vary dramatically throughout the journey. It would make sense to take a number of layers with you so that you can ensure you never feel too cold or too hot. Sudden changes in temperature are not good for the body.
