Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in myths. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Some of the popular myths associated with hypnosis and the reality behind them are given below.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It is a very simple technique, which can be understood easily with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after seeing participants effectively undergoing it in public sessions. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not exhibiting enough mental strength to block the effect of their words. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to resist the spell.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized person is fully awake to what is going on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is therefore able to concentrate fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some scientists have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another prevalent myth. Although, the finding has some shred of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the researchers made use of the identical hypnosis procedure for everyone. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different personality styles.

People also tend to equate hypnosis to meditation. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a mental state and generally has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. Trance is again a mental state sans any communication, whereas communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis method.

Another misconception is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about a development in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.

If a person falls for all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
