Trophies Down The Ages

Trophies are a symbol of victory and achievement and a manifestation of success. It gives the beholder the drive to do even better and enthuses him or her. This is why the trophy is usually created to reflect the subject in which the victor has accomplished something, like the depiction of a boxer on a trophy from that particular field.

Historically, trophies denoted success against enemies and were erected in a war field by the victor. The practice began in Greece when the war descriptions were engraved on the enemy’s artillery and were exhibited by the victorious army as marks of victory. These were given as offerings to the deities who had brought them success. Originally the term trophy has come from the word ‘tropaion’, which is Greek for ‘defeat’.

Romans had a different way of displaying their success through trophies. They built tall pillars and columns that bore a sculpted trophy high up for everyone to see and take note of their victory. Some years down the line, the winning athletes started receiving chalices from the kings and rulers.

It takes a lot of effort to design a suitable trophy. Just like other design tasks, even trophy designing needs a significant amount of analysis, market study and a thorough consideration of the materials to be used. A prized possession of the recipient, the trophy must be elegant yet durable enough to be exhibited for decades.

Today, a trophy may be awarded to signify victory in a sport, academic excellence or even achievement in one’s chosen career. Trophies come in myriad designs, shapes and with various provisions for engravings. The conventional metal design on top of a wooden base has been replaced by silver, gold or glass finish as well as crystal designs. A number of shops sell trophies that are found in different shapes and designs, giving customers a vast range to select from. The wide variety of trophies available in the market has made the task of purchasing the right trophy a lot easier than it used to be.
